A Fable of Change

John Kotter is a professor at Harvard Business School, his co-author Holger Rathgeber is an executive at one of the world’s leading medical technology companies. They have teamed up to tell the fable of a colony of penguins facing a change problematic in their book “Our Iceberg Is Melting: Changing and Succeeding Under Any Conditions”.
Fables have been used for millennia to illustrate in an easy and accessible way morals and problem solving strategies. The authors apply this technique to the modern day world. Using Kotter“s classic 8-step model of change enhancement the penguins identify the problem, developed a strategy, and tackle their dilemma in a team, combining the strength of totally different individuals.
The lessons of the penguins way can be applied to a variety of change and problem solving efforts, from change on the personal level, to the adjustment of whole organizations. This makes it an entertaining, quick and worthwhile read for anybody interested in the tactics and strategies of change processes.
